Why I Must Follow Christ

Christ Crucified

If you’ve read my reversion story you know I was searching everywhere for meaning in my life. Searching for myself. I finally succumbed to the longing in my heart and made a concerted effort to attend Mass on a regular basis and would ask myself the same question over and over. “There has got to be something more to this (Mass) than just this (what I am seeing).”

I wanted to know if everything the Catholic Church taught about Jesus being God and the Eucharist being the body and blood of Jesus were true. I listened to the readings every week but didn’t trust what was being read. As they say in the bible, I was stiff necked, hard hearted. Yes there are many proofs in the New Testament stating the validity of Jesus, but it seemed nothing could penetrate the thick shell of ego, fear and distrust that built up around me over the years. Below are a few Bible verses that were answers to my questions but I was blind to them.

“I said therefore to you, that you shall die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you shall die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

“Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)

Yea sure, these quotes make sense now but before the Holy Spirit made Himself known to me, it just didn’t sink in. I saw but didn’t see.

“Amen, amen I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood you do not have life within you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food and My blood is true drink. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me and I in him.” (John 6:53-56).

John then says, many disciples could not accept the teaching and went away. Jesus didn’t stop them and say, hey guys, where you going? I was speaking symbolically. Come back. No, He let them walk away. Why? When you are starting a movement, you want as many people as you can get to follow you. He let them walk because Jesus is speaking truth and they rejected that truth. They were blind. They could not see the Truth standing right in front of them.

By the way, when Jesus says, “Amen, amen” He’s saying, listen up guys, this is really, really important.

I could have found what I was looking for in the readings of The Feast of The Transfiguration of The Lord, The Feast of Corpus Christi, Nativity of Our Lord or Easter for Pete’s sake. But I had scales covering my eyes, bound by sin and lost in my own ignorance. It wasn’t until I took the steps to begin to get back to me, acknowledge the longing God put in my heart to return to Him and dare ask that question over and over again, “There has got to be something more to this (Mass) than just this (what I am seeing),” that the Holy Spirit so graciously but intensely slapped me up the side my head and said, welcome home my son, that my eyes finally and thankfully opened that I could see the Truth.

That is why I must follow Christ. Jesus, my Lord and Savior. That is why I must attend the Catholic Church, the Church that Jesus founded then gave the keys to the kingdom to Peter, and those keys have been passed on all the way to the current key holder, Pope Francis.

Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a retch like me, I once was lost but now I’m found was blind but now I see…
